Your Labrador’s Name– Why It’s Important
When asked about the most important aspects of dog training, I’m sure a lot of people would mention the “come” command, “sit”, “stay”, and perhaps “heel”. It seems that most people don’t really think about teaching your dog his or her name. But since this is the way you will be commanding your dog and it will be vitally important when you begin training, it’s important that you take the time to really teach your Labrador his name.
Try doing this exercise with your Lab before beginning other training, especially if you have a puppy and he or she hasn’t had a lot of time to learn his/her name yet.
Stand a few feet away from your Lab and have treats handy, but don’t do this until your pooch isn’t paying attention to you. If you try doing this while he/she is looking at you or waiting expectantly for something to happen, this exercise won’t help much.
While your dog is interested in something else, say his/her name clearly and in a friendly voice (when you speak in a low voice, it sounds like a growl to a dog — which is what you want to sound like when you’re reprimanding your dog, not teaching him/her new things). When he/she turns to look at you, praise him/her immediately and give them a small treat (on a side note, don’t worry about getting some fancy treats or, worse, giving your Lab something they’re not supposed to eat as a reward. You can use dry food kernels with just as much success: the point is just the receiving of food). When you’re done lavishing praise on your Lab, back off a few feet and repeat. Wait until they are preoccupied, then speak their name. As soon they look at you, praise them thoroughly.
When you’ve used this exercise a few times a day for a few days in a row, you’ll find that during your training sessions (especially if you’re working with a puppy), he or she will give much greater response to when you use their name. Be sure to use their name every time you’re teaching new commands.
