Question from a reader: What are some good techniques to use in training my young Labrador Retriever?
He’s 12 weeks old and now is a great time to start but where to start? How do I keep his attention? How do I learn my dogs language? How can I effectively housebreak my dog? And so on.

My best advice to you until then is that Labradors love food and will do almost anything for a small treat.
Go to your local library, vet / shelter or even google the information you need. Alot of it is really common sense.

If you can afford it, you and your dog should take a course but it is quite expensive. Pick one that does not use chock collars or hitting to discipline the dog. We were told we were training us not the dog. Use lots of treats(pick treats that are good for your dog). You have to work with him/her every day.He only gets a treat if he does what you want him to do.To teach him to sit ,put him on a leash, offer him a treat just above and behind his head and say sit, when he does (and he will) say yes and give him the treat. Do this a bunch of times and every time he does it say good boy . To teach him to lay down, get him to sit, then say lay down and hold the treat down on the floor, when he lays down to get it say yes and give him the treat.
This is how we taught our dog and he is a well behaved boy.He can also sing, dance, stay, roll over and then he can take a bow.
Never use a choke chain on him.
Never pull on his leash if you want him to follow you, think about what you would do if someone were trying to pull you , you would pull back, that is what your dog will do.Same with trying to get him to sit , if you push his butt down he will push against your hand.
I hope this helps.
