Training your Labrador Retriever: The Leash Snap
I have found a very interesting technique that I thought you would all appreciate learning. It is a form of negative reinforcement, which means that you have to be careful in applying it only when it is necessary, and never more forcefully than necessary. This technique has the potential for misuse, but when it is implemented correctly, it can send a strong message to your Labrador and make your training sessions a lot easier.
When we are leash-training our Labradors, there is the tendency to do a lot of pulling on the leash. Of course, most of the time it is your Labrador pulling on the leash, but nevertheless, this constant strain of resistance between you and your Lab is occurring. While you can’t always avoid it, pulling on a leash is damaging to your training endevours because it desensitizes your Labrador Retriever to the signals you can send through the leash. If you’re constantly trying to fight the Lab over control through the leash, how are you going to send him small signals like a light tug or jerk to let him know when he’s doing something he shouldn’t?
Anyways– sorry, that was a bit of a rant and I apologize — back to my awesome technique. It is called (for lack of a more creative term) the Leash Snap. For it to work effectively, there has to be slack in the leash. Therefore, this isn’t a good tool to use when your Lab is distracted and pulling on his leash.
When the Leash Snap is implemented correctly, it feels similar to how snapping a long vaccuum cord to make the wave (don’t tell me you’ve never tried that before) feels. While leash is taught, it won’t work. But with some slack, you can flick your wrist similar to how your would snap horse reigns and snap your Labrador’s collar. This does two things: it doesn’t cause nearly as much strain on you as a hard jerk or pull would, and it also sends a sharper, cleaner, and more distinct signal to your Labrador that will catch his attention much more firmly. You can use this move when you are training your Lab to avoid bolting after distractions, or when you are teaching him/her not to bark. (By the way, I will be going into both of those exercises in greater detail in future posts.)
That’s all for now– make sure you don’t snap so hard that your Lab’s head is forced downwards or towards you, but make sure that it is firm enough to make an impact.
