Training your Lab to Watch You (Part I)
I was just watching some videos from a Labrador training festival and the dogs I saw were unbelievable. They did everything their owners asked, from sitting perfectly still to diving into water to climbing up jungle gyms. They all (with little exception) completed their tasks without hesitating or disobeying in the least. I love seeing well-trained dogs go about their business.
When I watched that video, I noticed one thing that all those trained Labs had in common: They all paid the utmost attention to their trainers. Most of them never took their eyes off their “humans” — even when they were surrounded by other dogs, noise, people, food, and a million other distracting objects, they never looked away from their owners. Every movement, every step, every look and gesture those trainers made were closely monitered by the Labs close at their heels.
Now, I’m sure some of you are looking down at your Labrador and thinking, “that will never be my dog”. And guess what? You’re right. If you don’t take the time necessary to work with your Labrador to bring him up to that standard, you will never have a well-trained dog. But if you expend the effort, I know you can turn your Lab into a fantastic, responsive, eager-to-learn dog!
Now that you’ve decided to do whatever it takes to see that transformation within your Labrador, you get to work on the first thing necessary. Remember that one thing that all those excellently-trained Labradors had in common?
They watched their trainers. They hardly even blinked for concentrating so completely. This is where you need to start: train your Labrador to pay attention to you. How do you do this, you might ask?
