Training your lab the right way
Guess what? Most of us have been doing things wrong all along. If you’re like me, you have probably thought that when your Lab does something correctly (for example, obeys your cues instantly), you offer him/her lavish praise and treats. This is referred to in most circles as “positive reinforcement training”.
On the other hand, when Rover jumps up on you or doesn’t obey your cues, you tell him “No” sternly and perhaps use some other form of punishment, like spraying water in his/her face with a spray bottle. This method is called “negative reinforcement training”. There is one problem with this approach: Labradors are incredibly social and attention-seeking dogs. Therefore, when you look at him, talk to him, and interact with him in other ways, he/she considers his/her search for attention successful.
The fact that the attention you gave him/her was negative doesn’t have the same affect as it would on other breeds of dogs. In fact, it usually doesn’t phase Labs at all.
But if negative reinforcement doesn’t work, what is the solution? According to the trainers, the trick to curbing bad behavior in Labs is to ignore them completely. This might not make sense at first– but think about this. How many times does your Lab look at you a day? How much of his/her time is spent with you? This should give an indication to how your Labrador values your opinion and attention. Most of the things he/she does while around you are only for getting attention, and when you don’t offer any attention, more often than not your Lab will simply stop the action. Of course, this method doesn’t work in all cases, but it’s definitely worth a try considering the social nature of Labrador Retrievers.
