How should i start toilet training my 6 week old labrador puppy?
I have had a golden lab pup for just over a week, he is six weeks old. i also have a four year old lab who is toilet trained but when outside always goes to the back of the yard, but the pup just goes right by the back door, how can i encourage him to go where the older dog goes? Also how should i toilet train him not to go whenb he is allowed inside, they both stay outside while i am at work, and i allow them inside when im home. any help?
actually mushroom, you are wrong, the pup is completey fine outside, i live in australia and its not normal to keep theminside all the time, i had no choice but to take him at five weeks, i wanted to wait until 8 but the breeder had to get rid of them sooner
To your first question, he will start wandering further the older he gets. 6 weeks old, it's not uncommon to go right by the door, especially if the weather is cold where you are. Remember, he doesn't hold body heat very well at this age. Somewhere around 12 weeks, some sooner, some later, he will start going to the fence line if you have one. He will also follow the older dog to find out what he's doing and learn from him. Crate training is the best method of training a puppy inside but PLEASE keep in mind that puppies do not have good control over bowels or bladder until at least 6 months of age. Good luck with your yellow lab pup!!

After your pup eats in the morning take him outside and encourage him to take care of business. when you bring him back in reward him (small treat) and same goes for the evening feeding. in the morning and the evening. I'm not sure if you have a doggie door for your other dog but once you get them in a habit of it. (routine) he will get it, labs are a pretty smart breed but consistancy is the key!

If he messes in the house and you catch him in the act, just interrupt him and whisk him outside. If he finishes going outside, then praise him. If you find the waste after he's already gone, then just clean it up out of sight from him. If he sees you cleaning it up, he can start to think that it's a game. Never punish him after he's already done it, because he has a short memory, and won't know what you're punishing him for.
5 weeks old is really too young to be taking a puppy away from its mother and littermates. It learns a lot between 5-8 weeks from playing with its mom and littermates, so the minimum age you should remove him from them is 8 weeks. Obviously it's too late to correct it now, but be sure to give him lots of socialization with other dogs (not just the other dog you own), so that he learns proper communication with all dogs.
Please take the interactive tutorial in my link in the source list. It'll give you lots of helpful tips on housetraining that I'm sure you'll find useful.

He is probably going by the door because that is where you are. You will have to walk around with him where you want him to learn to potty. As he gets older and starts to experience his independance, he will start to follow your older one. If you have problems with him going in the house, the best method I have found is to get pee pee pads and when he does not go on those, clean it up as best you can and put the mess on the pee pee pad for a little while. 10-15 minutes should do it. You are just trying to get the smell away from the bad spot and to the good spot. You shouldn't smell it, but the small traces left behind are more than enough for your pup to pick up where it is.
I personally do not promote crate training as it can sometimes lead to seperation anxiety if it is not done properly. Your little pup has a bladder about the size of a peanut right now. Yours is around the size of a grapefruit, so you should be able to feel out when your pup needs to go. If you see him sniffing around in circles, it is definately time to go. If he squats right by the door everytime you take him out, try picking him up until you get to the correct area.
One last thing, if you are putting them out side while you are at work and it is a little chilly where you are, you should have a dog house with blankets so that your new pup can stay warm.
