How can you train a 7mth lab with a 7 year untrained beagle in the house?

Here’s an issue that some of you may be dealing with:

“I have tried training my lab, but with my beagle around it is hard because he was not trained. When I put my beagle outside or in another room, he barks continously and distracts the pup. Any suggestions?”

This is a good application of the leash snap technique I outlined in the last post. Try a training session with your Labrador that goes something like this: Either with the beagle outside or even in the same room with you, have your Labrador on a six-foot (approximately– just make sure it’s around this length) leash. Leaving slack in the leash, choose a command that either your Lab already knows or that you want to teach him/her and practice it the way you normally would. But keep the leash in your hand. When your Labrador is distracted and looks away from you and towards the beagle, use a leash snap (not too hard– remember, this is a puppy, so you need even less pressure than you would with an adult) and a “No” quickly AS SOON AS your Lab starts to look away. When you have his/her attention again, praise him/her and continue with your training. Use the leash snap as many times as the puppy looks away from you.

While the beagle may seem like a nuisance, you actually have a great opportunity in having him– he provides a distraction which you can then train your Labrador to avoid. Once your Lab knows how to ignore distractions, he/she will be MUCH easier to take outside and among stronger distractions, like other dogs and people.

Try seperating the two dogs while you are training the other one.

I have that problem but I have an anwser for you, I have a 10 month lab and a 12 year lab you take your puppy to obediance school and when you need to train your puppy at home my dog used to all ways get in the way either take the older dog outside while you train or give your older dog treats when your puppy gets treats(it will keep them busy). thats all you need to do. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

Why not try to train both of them at the same time. If you are willing to take time to train the lab then why not spend a few more minutes and try with the beagle, too. The beagle may think that you that you are not spending enough time with him/her.

Don't separate the dogs. It will take a lot of time, but your puppy will have to learn not to pay attention to the distractions and only to you. There will be many other distractions when you take the puppy out. And, if you don't train him properly, the other distractions may cause an accident or injury, for instance, another dog barking and your puppy getting away from you because he is not trained to ignore the distractions, which could lead to him gettting hit by a car, or someone stealing him. Don't you think it would be better if you trained him during these types of distractions so that he will know to listen to you and nothing else around him? I think so. Just take your time.
